Check website and server status

Key takeaways

  • This tool sends an HTTP GET request to the URL you enter from more than 300 HostTracker locations and reports the status code, the response time and the error each location saw.
  • A status code of 200 means the page was served; 3xx is a redirect, 4xx is a client-side error such as 404, and 5xx means the server itself failed.
  • Different answers from different locations point at a routing, DNS or firewall problem rather than a broken server, which one check from one place can never show.
  • It is free, needs no login and no credit card.
  • For continuous checks, see the distributed availability monitoring page.

Frequently asked questions.

Each location you pick sends a real HTTP or HTTPS request to the address and reports the status code, the IP address it resolved, redirects, the response headers, the certificate and cipher for HTTPS, and the time spent on DNS, connecting, waiting for the first byte and downloading the body. You see the same request from many networks side by side.
2xx means the page was served, 3xx is a redirect, 4xx is a problem with the request or access to the page, and 5xx is a server-side failure. The HTTP status codes guide explains each code you are likely to see, with fixes for the common ones like 502 Bad Gateway and 503 Service Unavailable.
The site is up, but something on certain network paths is not: a routing problem, a firewall or CDN rule that blocks some countries or IP ranges, or DNS that answers differently by region. Compare the resolved IP addresses and errors per location; if only one region fails, the problem is on that path, not the server.
Then the server is answering and the problem sits between you and it, often DNS, your network or the browser. The error string points to the fix: ERR_CONNECTION_REFUSED, ERR_CONNECTION_TIMED_OUT, ERR_NAME_NOT_RESOLVED and "This site can't be reached" each have a step-by-step guide.
It runs the same kind of request with more detail per location. For a quick "is it down for everyone or just me" answer, the website down checker gives a one-line verdict.
A one-off check only describes this moment. Website monitoring repeats the request from several locations on a schedule, confirms a failure from more than one location before alerting, and tells you by email, SMS, voice call, Slack, Telegram and more.
