What is uptime?

Website uptime is the share of a measured period during which a site or server answered as expected, written as a percentage. Owners track it because visitors rarely return to a site that was unavailable when they needed it, and because advertising and search platforms read a poor availability record as a quality signal.

Put simply, uptime is the ratio between online time and downtime over a chosen window, and most operators aim as close to 99.99% as their hosting allows. Every webmaster needs the definition and the measurement before the number means anything, so this guide covers both.

What does website uptime mean

In technical terms, uptime is the percentage ratio between a site's or server's availability period and its unavailability period. It counts every second from the first launch up to the exact moment you ask. A figure of 99.99% leaves only a small margin for the maintenance no one avoids and for the server problems that come with a new launch.

Different services count uptime differently for their own purposes. Google Ads, for example, leaves out maintenance downtime and force majeure in its ranking measurements when you can prove the outage was not a fault in your software, hardware or site code. Other ad services and search engines may still count the same period as downtime even when you hand them server data with timestamps.

How uptime is measured

What "three nines" and "five nines" allow

Uptime targets are usually written as a string of nines, and the difference between them is bigger than it looks on paper. Here is what each common target really allows in downtime:

The jump from three nines to five nines turns almost 9 hours of allowed yearly downtime into just over 5 minutes, so the target you promise in an SLA, or just to yourself, has to match what your hosting, code and monitoring can deliver.

What causes downtime

Downtime rarely has a single cause. The most common ones are:

  • Server or hosting hardware failure
  • Network or ISP outages between the server and its users
  • Traffic spikes or DDoS attacks overwhelming the server
  • Bad deployments, code errors or misconfiguration
  • Expired SSL certificates or domain registration
  • DNS misconfiguration or DNS provider outages
  • Scheduled maintenance that runs longer than planned

A high uptime ratio is what lets you promote a site and keep an audience, and losses follow when it slips. That is the argument for constant monitoring rather than occasional checking. Watch uptime alongside the other metrics, because a site can be reachable and still be broken in ways a simple up-or-down check never reports.

A working monitoring setup, ideally an automated one, also changes what happens after an outage starts. You have diagnostic results in hand: what failed, from where, and when it began. That shortens the time between the first failed check and a fix, compared with reconstructing the same picture by hand.
