A ping test reports two key numbers: round-trip time (how many milliseconds it took the packet to reach the destination and come back) and packet loss (the percentage of packets that never received a reply at all). Low, stable round-trip time and 0% loss is the healthy baseline; occasional single-packet loss is common and usually harmless, while high or repeated loss points to a real network problem.

One important caveat: a ping test that shows no response at all doesn't automatically mean a site is down — many servers and firewalls deliberately block the ICMP packets a ping test uses, while still serving normal web traffic perfectly well. If ping is inconclusive, an HTTP check confirms whether the actual website responds, and a port check confirms whether the specific service port is open. This is one of the most common ping surprises, and it doesn't mean the site is down. Many servers and the firewalls in front of them are deliberately configured to ignore or drop ICMP echo requests (the packets a ping test sends) while still accepting and answering normal web traffic on ports 80 and 443 without any problem. Blocking ICMP is a common, low-risk hardening step, since it removes one way of probing a server without affecting how it actually serves pages. If a site loads normally but pings show no response, that's almost always ICMP being filtered, not an outage - an HTTP check or a port check is the more reliable way to confirm real availability.

It depends heavily on what you're doing. For everyday web browsing, anything under about 100ms feels effectively instant; up to 150-200ms is still perfectly usable. Real-time uses are stricter: competitive online gaming benefits from under 50ms, and VoIP or video calls start to feel laggy above roughly 150ms. Ping time is also mostly a function of physical distance and network hops, so a server on another continent will naturally show a higher, and still perfectly healthy, ping than one in your own country.

Packet loss is the percentage of the small data packets sent during the test that never received a reply at all - as opposed to replying slowly, which only affects latency. Even small, consistent packet loss (1-2%) can cause noticeable problems for real-time traffic like video calls or online games, causing stutters or dropped frames, well before it's severe enough to affect ordinary web page loading. Occasional single-packet loss during a test is common and usually harmless; loss that's high, sustained, or growing over repeated tests points to a real network problem worth investigating.

Ping time is driven mostly by physical distance and the number of network hops data has to cross, so it's expected and normal for a server to show a low ping from a nearby location and a higher (but still healthy) ping from somewhere on the other side of the world. Testing from multiple locations at once is what tells you whether a slow ping is simply distance, or an actual routing problem affecting one specific region while the rest of the world sees normal response times.

A ping test measures basic network-level reachability and round-trip time using ICMP, without caring what applications or services are actually running on the destination. A port check goes one level deeper: it tests whether a specific TCP or UDP port (say, 443 for HTTPS or 25 for mail) is actually open and accepting connections. A server can fail to respond to ping while every service on it works perfectly (ICMP blocked), and conversely a server can answer pings while a specific service's port is closed - the two checks answer different questions and are often most useful together.
